Review of Fahrenheit 451 3
The famous novel’ Fahrenheit 451’ is a thought-provoking and dystopian book. It tells us the importance of reading and thinking individually.
Montag was an ignorant fireman. He knew nothing except burning the books and the knowledge in it. He did not even know why he became a fireman. His family was very cold and distant, but he was not aware of the boring and horrible life that he lived.
Montag had a wife named Mildred, who was very fatuous and idiotic. She did nothing every day except watching silly television shows, or chatting with her superficial friends. Because her life was so uninteresting, she accidentally commits suicide and did not remember doing so. Finally, she ran away, and hidin a hotel. After Mildred’s actions, Montag thought that life can be better than what he sees around him.
Unexpectedly,Montag met an eccentric young girl named Clarisse. Clarisse loved getting in touch with nature in many different ways, and had a family that was genuine and real. She also liked to question the world around her, and asked Montag thought provoking questions about why the world and the society were the way they were.Clarisse enlightened Montag, and paved the way for him to continue to think about the crazy world. Unfortunately, she was killed by a car.
Then,on a mission of burning an old lady’s books, an event struck Montag heavily in his mind. When they asked the old lady to get out from her house, the old lady ignited a match and suicided with her books. She did this in order to encourage the citizens that they should fight against the evil government, and enlightened them that books were good for both your heart and your mind. After the event, Montag wanted to know why the old lady used her life as a statement. Were books really that important?
After the old lady’s death, Montag accidentally found Faber, who was a retired English professor. Faber made Montag know more about the importance of reading and critically thinking. Also he gave Montag a set of green bullet in order to contact with him. In addition, he still memorized some books and might be helpful when the world’s order was upended in the end of the novel.
The firemen’s captain Beatty was a very symbolic character. He deceived the firemenby instilling them an impression that books were prohibited by law and were feared among the public. Also he was aware of the change of Montag, therefore he kept persuading Montag that books were the source of chaos. However, his snobbish attitude towards the firemen did not last forever, because Montag used a flame-thrower to kill him.
But the action forced Montag ran for his life, because it made him a criminal. After he lost the police, he found Granger and the other surviving members of the group that would bring back the burned knowledge by a new modern technology. Montag met a lot of people who had the same hobby of reding and thinking as him. After the war, the group moved away, following the track. Finally the novel came to a merry end, that was the beginning of a new world. It may be better than the previous one, or not.
In my opinion, this book is brilliant because it preaches the importance of reading and thinking individually.
