To Kill a Mockingbird 1 Racism
In To Kill a Mockingbird, the writer gives us a glimpse into American society just after the Great Depression. The Great Depression really hit the American economy hard and caused the economic prosperity to drop dramatically, which in turn made many Americans very poor and unemployed. The story takes place in the poor state of Alabama in southern America, and the life there totally surprised me. It differed hugely from what I imagined American daily life would be like.
The most obvious and important difference was how poor and underdeveloped Alabama was. In fact, in Maycomb County, there were nearly no modern building or basic technology. And, there was racial segregation. In Alabama, and especially in the segregated schools of the old South, educational resources were lacking and very limited. Most students there would not learn important knowledge of the world surrounding them and be taught in a state of squalor. Moreover, the hygiene there was a significant problem. For example, Burris Ewell in the book even had an insect in his hair, and his fingernails were all black. This rural life really was alien to me, because I grew up in an advanced city and received a good education, so I can’t build a clear image in my head about their lives. I cannot imagine growing up in that world.
If I lived there, I would probably change a lot. Because I am part of a minority group, I would be less educated than white students. I would also get rejected out of hand by people and my life would be harder than it is now. However, sometimes hardship can also mean growth. People who experience hard times often (NOT ALWAYS) learn to persevere and solve their ordeals one by one. But what will remain the same will probably be my tenacioustraits. I will not fall deep into the darkness of this horrible world, and I will fight for my own liberty.
ToKill a Mockingbird can really help us to understand how underdeveloped and segregated American society was in the early 20th century. We shall not kill and discriminate each other just because of differences in skin colours and beliefs, we have the same ancestors. This issue shall be solved because weare in a single family and share the same blood.
