Will mothers love one child more than the others?

Recently, I was readinga popular novel called The Westing Game. In this novel, I found one interesting part that appeal to readers.

In this part, the family’s youngest daughter Turtle asks her mom Mrs.Wexler about making the dressmaker hem her witch’s dress. Meanwhile, Angela, the older daughter, is having the dressmaker make her new wedding dress. Their mother clearly has two attitudes for her daughters. First of all, she doesn’t like her younger daughter Turtle, who is ugly, silly, and always disturbing others while they are working in her mother’s view.  For instance, she said: “Can’t you see she’s busy with Angela’s wedding dress?”Here it clearly states that her mother thinks that she often bothers people. She also said:“And why must you wear a silly costume like that?”That means she thinks Turtle is ugly. And therefore, it turns out that Mrs. Wexler is unconcerned with Turtle, but still very stern.

However, to her older daughter Angela, she shows a completely different kind of treatment. In her mind, Angela is an extremely angel-faced girl, who has a marvelous fiancé,and also very kind. For example, there’s a sentence in the novel which says: “So unlike golden-haired, angel-faced Angela.”This shows Angela is pretty. In addition, there’s a sentence that says: “Doctor Deere is a brilliant young man.”So her fiancée is good, in her Mom’s eyes. Moreover, a statement is written, “I’ll hem your witch’s costume,” said by Angela. This clearly means Angela is really kind. Overall, her mother spoils Angela.

In contrast, the daughters have different thoughts about their mom. For Turtle, she’s disconcerted and very sad. She thinks that Mrs. Wexler treats them unfairly. So that she ends up being angry and sometimes a bit of jealous of Angela. For Angela, she feels very sensible towards her mother, and ends up being strongly rewarded, with lots of love and care.

I think Mrs.Wexler should care her two daughters fairly. If she does not, the daughters will soon end up in greater harm in society.
