Three Cups of Tea 6: The UN
Since the formation of the United Nations, the UN has worked very hard to promote peace, develop international relationships between countries, eradicate poverty, and strengthen economic cooperation. One of the most famous projects the UN undertakes is the demining of former warzones.
After a war, there might be remnants of bombs and mines. A mine is deadly and dangerous. If a civilian walks on it, he or she might get killed. Humanitarians want to guarantee the citizens’ safety; therefore they need to clear the land for citizens to walk around safely. The UN comes up with ways for citizens to avoid stepping onto a mine. They can receive risk education, which raises the citizens’ awareness, and the UN experts also teach them how to avoid mines. In addition, victim assistance is important. This includes information management, emergency and continuing medical care, physical rehabilitation, and securing employment when the victims heal. Moreover, people can spread the view that a no-mine society is peaceful and better for all. People should encourage countries to stop manufacturing mines and destroy mine storage to decrease the number of deaths in the world.
The history of this project started in 1997. The members started this project to support the UN stance of “The world free of the threat of landmines.” This was the goal for many humanitarians at that time.
This plan was very important because it can help guarantee civilian safety, and the promotion of peace in the world.
Partially because of this plan, the UN is becoming the world’s largest organization to emphasize humanitarianism.
