My imaginary community.
In The Giver, the society is completely different from ours. However, if I were to create a community based on my design, then I would probably create a better community than the society in the book.
People would live in a community where there exists a lasting peace. Even though the community would be small, there would always be things to see and do. The population of the community would be homogenous -mostly merchants and ordinary citizens. The civilians would be very kind and merciful to each other, and there are no quarrels within a family. This community’s facilities would also be highly-organized. The community’s technologyis very developed, so the productive forces would be very strong. The community often makes deals with other communities, so there is enough wealth to share with the citizens. The citizens would not worry about basic life. People would choose their own occupation based on interest. In addition, the immigrants must disperse an outrageously high tax to get into the community.
The government of the community would be very virtuous, and govern the people fairly. However, the citizens would enact a set of rules called Omierda that are very strict. The citizens and the government must abide by these rules. The rule-breaker will suffer from painful ordeals such as being fired from a cannon. The government is not formed by officials or aristocrats; but instead from many eminent and intelligent citizens that are agreed upon by a committee of voters.
The community’s ideal to strive towards is to enjoy work and life. The ideal in the citizens’ hearts are: the only way we can retain peace, happiness, and stability is to work hard for our community.
Unlike most countries, this community’s hierarchy would be very equal. There are no poor people and no autocrats. They all run the community together.
They believe in a powerful Sun God called Apu Inti, devoting many temples to him.The citizens have a belief that all the things come from the Sun God, and therefore they need to repay Apu Inti, by working hard and living virtuously.
There are some obvious differences between this fictitious community and our real society. The community is freer; it allows citizens to express their opinions when controversies occur. In addition, their technology is more advanced than ours. Moreover, the relationship between citizens is better than in our society.
However, there are some problems with this community such as it does not compel citizens to work and maintain a minimum life standard. Although, because of the high tax,if people work less and less, then the community will still face many economical problems in the future.
This would be my imaginary community.
