Would you live in a world without pain?
Jonas begins to feel some negative memories in The Giver. These negative memories always frighten Jonas.
Pain definitely has some values, and it can bea teacher. There are two types of pain that we often encounter in our daily life. Those are physical pain and psychological pain. Physical pain can be a signal that warns people to pay attention to their body. Psychological pain is the pain that you often have when something greatly impacts your spirit. For instance, something very dreadful like World War II can even compel some people to suicide because they can’t bear the horror. Smaller scale tragedies like a divorce can also impact a couple or their children. However, this kind of pain can let you grow and feel more deeply, giving you more experience and more maturity. For instance, if destiny didn’t make Beethoven deaf, he couldn’t create such a profound piece, like the Symphony of Fate. In addition, if Germany didn’t threaten England, then Churchill might not have discovered his tough characteristics that helped him lead England through World War II. Human history is constantly moving forward because of pain; pain is a motivator. Wars can make people cherish peace, work to make peace lasting. Moreover, if we don’t have pain, then there will be no yearning for a better life.
I do not want to live in a society without pain. If we remove pain, our world will be numb and unreal, just like the community in The Giver. There are no colors, no seasons, and no love or emotions. In addition, although we suffer from pain, it gives us a deeper perspective of happiness. For instance, when I ultimately master a super difficult piano piece, I am very proud of myself, and therefore experience a great happiness.
Even though pain can be very excruciating, after you survive the difficulties and troubles, there will be more lasting happiness overall.
