Review of Fahrenheit 451 2
In‘Fahrenheit 451’ Montag thinks kerosene is perfume to him before, but now he no longer thinks that kerosene smells good. He starts to hate kerosene.
At first, the reason why Montag thinks that kerosene is perfume is because he is a fireman, and firemen are used to the smell. Montag becomes a fireman because his father and grandfather were all fireman, and he seems to be inheriting the family job. At that time, he never read books. Thus, he never thinks that his life is boring and terrible. He never considers why he became a fireman. He only knows that his ancestors are firemen and so he needs to be a fireman too. Also, he hardly ever talks to Mildred, so their feelings are cold and distant.
However,an unexpected meeting occurs when Montag meets Clarisse. Clarisse is aclose-to-nature girl. She watches the sunset, tastes the raindrops, and uses dandelions to touch her chin. She communicates with her family, making her family full oflife and laughter. She enlightens Montag, letting him know that life can be different, life can be better than his original one. After a few more meetings, he begins to think about books. Why books should be burnt?
Finally, the firemen goes to a house and tries to burn the books that an old woman has. But the woman chooses death just to protect her books. She is fighting against the government. That event makes Montag think why she dies just for thebooks? Also, he has pain and hollowness in his own life. His wife is a very good example. She likes watching boring television shows with her seashell earphones on. She watches every day, not reckoning the pathetic life she is living. When she feels tired she just eats pills. Recently, she even committed accidental suicide and cannot remember what she did that night. Montag notices his wife’s horrible life. Therefore,he steals a book, hiding it secretly under his pillow. He starts piling up books, trying to read secretly. He no longer thinks kerosene is perfume, but makes him want to vomit.
In this huge change, I know something about Montag. He has keen eyes and is very good at noticing people’s changes. He has seen the life of his wife and Clarisse, and think the difference, draws comparisons. Most importantly, he learns from the two people. Also, he is good at thinking about the issue of books. When he witnesses the scene of the old woman’s suicide for her books, he immediately thinks about the importance of books. A clever thought comes to Montag, he takes a book and is eager to read. That is an astute and sanedecision.
In conclusion, Montag changes greatly from the beginning. He is more sensible of the books, himself, and the firemen. Hopefully he will rise sharply from the bottom to the top, from a fireman to a scholar, from a boring life to a wonderful life!
